Why Demand?
Sex trafficking and all other forms of commercial sexual exploitation exist because there is a market for it.
Who drives that market? By and large, men… American men.
“If we don’t address demand, we won’t end trafficking…”
Do. One. Thing.
The Demand Collaborative calls upon every sector to invest financial resources, political will, organizational capacity, and cultural influence to ensure a Comprehensive Demand Response becomes the North Star in responding to the blatant human rights violations inherent in sex trafficking and all other forms of commercial sexual exploitation.
Here is a guide toward a Comprehensive Demand Response:
WHAT
A guide for signatories to make their response actionable within 1-48 months.
WHY
Signing the declaration, while important for solidarity, does not create the needed action to bring about a network wide Comprehensive Demand Response.
HOW
Listed below are a myriad of ways that organizations and individuals from all sectors of society could "Do.One.Thing" to contribute to a Comprehensive Demand Response.
Financial Resources
Support the financial needs of demand-focused programming.
Give funds.
Help write grants.
Partner on programs that result in additional programmatic funding.
Organizational, Institutional & Faith Community Capacity
Leverage your unique capacity to support demand-focused programming.
Share your tools and techniques.
Conduct demand research.
Advocate for/establish a john school (mandated where possible, voluntary where not). Could be in-person, virtual, or hybrid delivery.
Establish a resource booklet for men who want to stop buying sex including action items and personal goal setting.
Create a counseling stream within your organization/community specifically tailored to sex buyers.
Offer pornography recovery groups for your faith community and/or direct people to outside pornography recovery or sex addiction recovery groups.
Build relationships with demand-focused non-profits and help provide them with volunteer support from your faith community.
Cultural Influence
Leverage your sphere of influence to educate and enroll your community, friends, and families to end demand.
Invite speakers to discuss demand.
Host a public-facing event/march/demonstration.
Pay for an ad mentioning the harms of buying sex.
Commit to a book/research/article/podcast and host a discussion.
Organize an end-demand and/or pornography awareness campaign using symbols/badges/pins to spark conversations between people.
Demand-focused signage campaigns at local post-secondary institutions, airports, nightclubs, hotels, lounge restaurants, etc.
Advocate with your local education officials to have end-demand education brought into the high school curriculum.
Report sex buyers’ license plates to the police.
Organize a film screening and panel discussion event.
Publicly denounce and boycott companies and products that glamorize and/or profit off sexual exploitation (e.g.- NCOSE Dirty Dozen).
Political Will
Leverage or increase willingness within your community.
Invite speakers to discuss demand within your task force or community.
Organize a letter-writing campaign to your legislators about the need for Equality Model legislation that addresses demand.
